ACIDOPHILUS YEAST INFECTION

Acidophilus for Yeast Infection

Lactobacillus acidophilus has long been known to be beneficial to one’s health.  In 1908, the Bulgarian Metchkinoff suggested taking a daily dose of yogurt as he considered it would promote health and long life.  Since then Lactobacillus acidophilus has been used in treating a variety of diseases.  Constipation, diarrhea, and even skin problems have been thought to benefit from Lactobacillus acidophilus.  One prominent study on the efficacy of acidophilus yeast infection treatments conducted by Eileen Hilton and her colleagues at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center showed evidence that acidophilus does indeed help allay yeast infections.  Hilton found that eating 8 ounces of yogurt containing Lactobacillus acidophilus decreased yeast colonization and lowered the rate of yeast infection.

Acidophilus Yeast Infection Cure

You can take Lactobacillus acidophilus and other probiotics orally to help keep your digestive tract free from excessive amounts of yeast fungus; an important thing for both genders.  In addition to colonizing the gut, it is thought that Lactobacillus acidophilus will also begin to colonize the vagina after they have colonized the gut as the bacteria move from the rectal area to the vagina.  A healthy vagina will have a good amount of acidophilus in it to keep yeast organisms at bay.

Research conducted in the 1970’s at Michigan State University found that there is a strong correlation between recurrent yeast infections and having yeast overgrowth in the digestive tract.  In the study, 98 women who had recurrent vaginitis all had yeast in their stools.  The study also showed that if yeast was not found in the stool it was never found in the vagina.  The study also suggested that the only way to eliminate excessive yeast overgrowth in the vagina would be to first eliminate excessive yeast overgrowth in the gut.  If you have been experiencing recurrent infestations of yeast in your vagina, it is logical to assume you have yeast overgrowth in your gut.

Why an Acidophilus Yeast Infection Cure Will Work

Acidophilus combats yeast fungus in two different ways.  The first way an acidophilus yeast infection treatment will work is by fermenting sugars.  As a result of acidophilus’ fermentation of sugar, there is less sugar available for yeast to eat and grow from.  As a result of less food available, yeast has less of the raw materials it needs to multiply without restraint.  In addition to reducing the amount of sugar in its environment, Lactobacillus acidophilus ferments sugar into lactic acid.  The lactic acid produced by acidophilus helps to create an environment with a lower pH, and yeast cannot thrive well in highly acidic conditions.
